New clinic will improve ongoing care for head injury patients

A NEW clinic at Grimsby's Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital is providing a lifeline for patients with minor head injuries.
Traditionally, patients attending the hospital's emergency care centre with a minor head injury were discharged and given an information leaflet.

CLINIC: Diana, Princess Of Wales Hospital.
Now a fortnightly clinic is being held which allows patients who have suffered a minor head injury to have a follow-up examination to ensure they are not experiencing any continuing problems.

Dr Abayomi Salawu, the consultant in rehabilitation medicine who runs the service, said: "We have seen people suffering a mild head injury experience significant symptoms beyond 48 hours and the opportunity to have expert input and support has greatly minimised the long-term consequences of head injury.

"A developing injury can be relatively subtle to begin with but, if left, can gradually worsen. Problems can include personality changes, emotional problems and uncontrolled aggression.

"If we do detect any changes, we are able to put in the support they require at an early stage. This could be medication, neuro- behavioural therapy, or access to a clinician.

"I would say 90 per cent of the people we see in clinic we only see the once. For the ten per cent of people who have developed further problems, we can work with them and their families to ensure they receive the appropriate care, help and advice they need to resume a normal life."
