Cig-nalling the start of a healthy alternative to smoking tobacco

SHOPS in Grimsby are among the first in the country to stock a new range of electronic cigarettes.

Vapestick e-cigarettes, described as the healthy alternative to smoking tobacco, have until now only been available in big cities such as London, Birmingham and Manchester.

But now, the product has been brought to North East Lincolnshire by local distributor Jaz Dhaliwal.

Former shopkeeper Mr Dhaliwal said: "I've always been in retail and I was looking for the right product to sell in stores. This product caught my eye because it was something different and wasn't available in many places outside of London.

"When I saw the product I thought it would do well in retail. It's a credible alternative to smoking tobacco. You still get that sensation of smoking but without any of the dangerous side effects."

Instead of harmful tobacco smoke, the e-cigarettes produce a water-based vapour that comes with, or without, nicotine, and they contain no tar, no carbon monoxide, no ammonia, no smells, no ash.

The e-cigarettes can be used, or "vaped" in restaurants, clubs, pubs, offices, trains, planes, and they are cheaper than traditional tobacco cigarettes.

The Vapestick range is stocked in the likes of Harrods and Tesco, and Mr Dhaliwal says there has already been great demand for the product among local retailers.

It is sold in about 40 convenience stores in Grimsby, Cleethorpes, and Immingham, as well as a handful of shops in Scunthorpe.

And this weekend the e-cigarettes will be available in Cleethorpes nightclub After Dark.

Mr Dhaliwal said: "Initially retailers were a bit dubious as they were used to customers coming in and wanting normal cigarettes. So what I did was to get a customer to try the product and the response has been very good."

Mr Dhaliwal, one of about 10 Vapestick distributors across the UK, most of which are concentrated around London, will eventually be taking the product out across his patch, which goes out to York, Sheffield and Lincoln.

He said: "Grimsby is lucky in that we are seeing the product now, but two years down the road, the Vapestick will be everywhere."

The Costcutter store, on Ripon Street, Grimsby, was the first shop in the area to stock the product.

Owner Scott Bradley said: "I was a bit sceptical at first, because I didn't think my customers would be that interested in it. I thought they would be quite happy to stick to smoking normal cigarettes.

"I was expecting it to be a real slow burner but the response has been great and I sold out of my first order in two weeks. It's quite a quirky product and there are incredible health benefits as well."

Robbie Marklew, operations director at After Dark, said: "The appeal for us is that customers can stay in the club rather than having to go outside to smoke, which is better for generating an ambience and atmosphere inside the venue."
